About 2 and a half years ago, I moved into my apartment and let me tell you, it’s been a love affair since then. I can truly say I’m so happy and so at peace when I’m home. One of the things I love the most, is the way I’ve used simple everyday things to elevate my home. A lot of my furniture is all hand me downs from my family and I haven’t spent a fortune on decor but small tips can just take it up a level. Read more to find out how I attempt to elevate my home into a place of happiness.
1. Fragrance
My followers and readers should by now know that I am obsessed with burning a candle everyday. It’s such a habit and brings me great joy. When it comes to candles, take all my money! Through this, I’ve learnt which brands are worth it and which are a waste. It’s no secret that I fully take advantage of any specials Cape Island have to always have stock of my fragrances. I’ve even converted friends and family into being lovers of their fragrances too!
Add a diffuser to the mix and you’re on a roll! Not only do they add such a lovely scent, but a touch of sophistication. You can read more on Cape Island on this post here.
2. Glassware
Another obsession of mine? Glassware! I have such a big collection yet I can’t say no to always buying more. I don’t know who I think I am as it’s only me living in my house using only one glass at a time. But honestly, my glass cabinet makes me very happy. I love entertaining my friends and having all different types of glasses for them to choose from. The great thing though, I never spend a lo of money! I am a suuuuucker for the glassware from PEP Home! What a bargain and they are so beautiful! I can’t walk past one of their stores without going in. Another place a lot of my glassware is from, is Mr Price Home.
3. Flowers & Plants
If I could buy myself fresh flowers all the time, I would. Unfortunately, budget-wise it’s not very sustainable. I sometimes like to justify buying some and tricking myself into thinking I need to buy them all the time for content reasons. Nevertheless, now and then I treat myself to fresh flowers and it makes such an impact in my house. I also love having my plant babies around my house. If that’s too much for you, you can get some great fake plants and flowers that you can add as decor to your home. Pop them in a beautiful vase and you’re sorted.
4. Declutter
Now I’m not saying you need to go Marie Kondo on every space in your house but putting in just 5 minutes a day to declutter your space will make such a difference. I don’t have kids so I can’t say what my house will look like one day when I do have kids but for now, it’s up to me to keep my space clean and tidy. I have a table that I just collect things on and have to make a conscious effort to declutter every once in a while. Like that ‘chair’ in your bedroom where your clothes just happen to pile up on.
5. Switch Out Your Packaging
A soap dispenser is something I use everyday in my kitchen and bathroom. So why not make sure it fits the aesthetic of your home? Switch out your generic packaging for classier soap dispensers; hand creams; body lotions etc to elevate your space. My kitchen has a lemon theme so I have a cute lemon liquid soap and hand cream set. Then in my main bathroom, I have the African Storm set from Cape Island which is great because you can buy refills for the products. It’s just a small switch that can add an aesthetic touch to your place.
6. Textures
My last ‘tip’ to elevate your home is to include textures. This I personally do this through blankets; scatter cushions; and throws in my living room in baskets and on my couches. I personally always like to lie with something over me while watching tv, so in summer I’ll have some light throws on my couches and in winter I’ll bring out the warmer blankets. Different textured scatter cushions also add a great touch to your living rooms. It’s also a great way to make your guests feel comfortable and cozy while visiting you.
