Drakensberg, South Africa
A few weeks ago, I drove down to the Northern Drakensberg to spend a weekend at the Montusi Mountain Lodge. My reason for this visit was a special one, it was to celebrate two amazing friends getting married! A weekend away in the beautiful mountains with great friends and festivities – what more could one want?
More About Montusi Mountain Lodge
Halfway between Johannesburg and Durban, in the Northern Drakensberg, Montusi Mountain Lodge offers you a full view of the Drakensberg’s most famous part, the Amphitheatre escarpment. It was an easy drive from Pretoria and the fact that I had downloaded some great road trip playlists made it even better.
The 1000 hectare estate offers so many activities but the number one thing they recommend you do when you stay there, is just to relax. You can literally chill on your patio and look out to the escarpment. I arrived there on Friday afternoon and had some time before the wedding celebrations began on the Friday night so I embraced my time off and sat outside with a cup of coffee watching the horses go past.
Montusi Mountain Lodge offers 16 spacious suites. They consist of the Garden Suites (which I stayed in); the Family Suites and then the newer Mountain Suites. Each suite is individually decorated and offers amazing views of the Amphitheater. All the bathrooms have been renovated which really impressed me. I’m not sure if you’re the same as me, but I’m really not a fan of old bathrooms.
Dining at The Lodge
The food during that weekend was so delicious. My first impression was the braai the couple hosted us for on Friday night but then breakfast the next morning was just as scrumptious. There is a buffet with homemade jams and preservatives; fresh fruit and all different types of cereals and then the hot menu changes daily. My favourite aspect of the breakfast was the cold pressed freshly squeezed juices (best believe this was very much needed after the actual wedding haha). How beautiful is the view while enjoying your breakfast?
What You Can Get Up To
There are so many activities available at the lodge, plus an adventure site just 10 minutes away. I was happily playing make up make up with the beautiful bridal party so I didn’t get to try out everything Montusi offers but you can go hiking; play tennis; fishing (man I’d love to go back for that); horse back riding and more!
Montusi Mountain Lodge believes in the conservation of the Norther Drakensberg. They managed to change a Wattle infested wasteland into a rehabilitated conservation area. They also made sure that their indigenous trees and man-made forests flourished and became a haven for the bird life. This resulted in the return of the Mountain Reedbuck, Vaal Rhebuck, Bushbuck and the elusive Eland to this area.
Montusi are also dedicated to saving water where ever possible and strive to be as sustainable as they can with factors such as growing their own vegetables; making their own jams and marmalades etc. Plus they try encourage their guests to look after the environment too.
A HUGE thank you to the beautiful new Mr and Mrs King for an amazing weekend at Montusi! I had the best time and will definitely be visiting there again soon! If you’d like to see a bit more from the wedding, check out my Instagram post here.
