Fairlawns Boutique Hotel

Elegant. Opulent. Luxurious. Three words that immediately come to my mind when I think of the Fairlwans Boutique Hotel. Surrounded by lush gardens and set in Johannesburg, South Africa, this boutique hotel is the absolute destination for local and international travelers.

A Bit Of History

Established in 1997, this bit of land used to be a family home. It was after a big sale that the owner decided to realize his dream of having a ‘country hotel’ – albeit in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg.

The original accommodation block was comprised of 12 suites, each uniquely decorated. Apart from the African Suite, they are mostly Euro-centric in their decorating with high ceilings, elaborate cornices, tall doors, and sumptuous fabrics.

Over time there were additions, such as 20 Grand Chateau Suites, 6 Villa suites, a 240 sqm Maison Spa Suite fit for royalty, and the 470 sqm Villa Moji.

Maison Spa Suite

Boasting 240sqm of total opulent European styled interior, the Maison Spa Suite (which was previously known as the Presidential Spa Suite) was graciously offered as our home for a night. There were two en-suite bedrooms, Irina and I stayed in the main bedroom and Sarah stayed in the second bedroom. Both had gorgeous bathrooms while the main bedroom had a beautiful walk in closet. The two bedrooms are on the second floor of the suite. On the ground floor, you’ll find quite a few rooms. I’m pretty sure my apartment could fit into the suite three times over at least. A study; private spa room; kitchen; guest cloakroom; dining room and lounge can all be found on the bottom floor.

Lavish interior decor fills every space of the Maison Spa Suite. Even though the grounds of Fairlawns are so extravagant, you’ll not want to leave your elegant accommodation.

Dining At Fairlawns

There are four options for you to choose from at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel. Amuse-Bouche; Manor House Bistro; Into The Woods and the Muse Champagne Room. We had dinner at Amuse-Bouche, five-star flavour and a beautiful ambiance. I had the mushroom risotto, it was so delicious. A meal will cost just under R300, this will include some wine and a meal.

Breakfast the next morning was just as luxurious. Think oysters; fresh fruit; pastries; champagne; basically anything your heart desires.

The Amuse-Bouche menu is also available in the privacy of your suite through in-suite dining.

The Spa At Fairlawns

If you’ve ever wanted to travel to Bali but haven’t had the time, I highly suggest you spoil yourself with a day at the spa. I felt like I was back in Bali (I can’t believe I was there a year ago – see more here). The exquisite bamboo forest gardens of the Balinese-style Spa will have you wanting to spend the whole day there. So I actually recommend booking a treatment (or two or three treatments) in the morning and then spending the day there soaking up the beautiful surroundings. I had a back and neck massage and I will be honest with you, it wasn’t the most memorable one I’ve ever had. I think my therapist was distracted as it was late on a Saturday afternoon but the outdoor treatment salas made up for it.

The Spa also includes a heated plunge pool, Knipe Therapy, spa bath and hidden escapes on a Chinese daybed or pod swing chairs. Plus the next time I travel, I’ll definitely take note of their Jet Lag Massage.

Green and Glamorous

What would a review be on The Glam Green Girl if I didn’t mention the eco side of it? Fairlawns Boutique Hotel is constantly looking for ways to decrease their carbon footprint. This is currently being done the following way:

• All heating in the new Grand Chateau Suites is supplied by Solar Power.

• The Gran Chateau Suites have a Grey Water System that recycles all water into clean and toxin free water that may be used as irrigation.

• Their kitchens use organic and local produce wherever available.

• They are proud members of SASSI (Sustainable Seafood), their restaurant is committed to only serving seafood that is not endangered in any way.

• Fairlawns Boutique Hotel actively recycles materials wherever possible.

Final Thoughts

The most perfect venue for bridal showers; anniversary weekends; weddings and every celebration imaginable, I highly; highly recommend spending at least one night there. While it’s pretty extravagant to stay at the Maison Spa Suite for most people (it’s R27,500.00 per night), there are other suites that are much more affordable (from R3600.00) and again, I really recommend it.

Having said that though, there were a few things that bugged me a bit. There was no turndown service, something I expected in such a lavish suite. We had issues with the sound system and the phones. Small things but worth mentioning anyway.

Other than that – I will definitely be spending time there again. It is SO worth it! Plus spending the night there with my girlfriends was amazing – we’re creating the best memories toegther!
