[ECO]: 5 Steps To Less Waste

With the New Year in full swing and everyone getting back to their routines, I wanted to share some tips on how you can create less waste this year. By no means am I not guilty of creating waste, but it’s something I want to work on this year. If you’re keen to join me, read below for five easy steps to less waste.

1). Ditch the plastic straws. I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a cute straw for parties and sometimes mindlessly put my straw in my drink at a restaurant without even blinking an eye. This is something I need to work on. Plastic straws create so much waste, and often injure animals (especially marine life) when not disposed of properly. Don’t fear, you can still slurp your drinks through a straw, just try use a paper one or even better, a glass one.

PS: try these glass straws from Stream, available from Faithful To Nature. They are durable; reusable and you get 2 types.  Plus, they are locally made!

2). Use Reusable Shopping bags. Another thing I am guilty of. I always have the best intention of bringing reusable shopping bags, but then I forget to put them in the car, and then when I get to the shops, I use normal bags. Don’t get me wrong, we still re-use these bags or recycle them, but it will be so much better to just ditch them all round. So I’ve packed my reusable bags in the car already and now I have no excuses!

3). Switch to glass drinking bottles. Now we all know that staying hydrated is very important. This usually means grabbing a water bottle at the shop and then refilling it. Well. how about switching that to a glass water bottle. It’s safer for you, and like I’ve mentioned before, glass is 100% recyclable.

4). Food waste should be use as compost. Leftover bits of vegetables; old eggs; tea bags; banana peels etc, instead of throwing them in the trash and letting them be taken to a landfill, create a small compost heap in your garden. This can then later be used for your own vegetable garden.

5). Recycle. Aaaaah, last but not least, my favourite eco tip, recycle. Create 4 recycling bins (plastic; paper; glass and tims) and you’ll be amazed at how much can be recycled instead of thrown away. You’ll wonder how you ever went without recycling.

Are you going to try create less waste this year? Let me know, I’d love to hear all about it!
