Kombucha, pronounced kom-boo-chuh, one of the latest health trends in terms of beverages made it’s way to my fridge at home the other day. I had heard a bit about kombucha, but hadn’t tried it yet. I was then introduced to Theonista’s brewed kombucha tea with delicious added flavours.
So what is exactly is kombucha? Well kombucha is made by fermenting tea and sugar with a specific culture called a SCOBY. This SCOBY is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. Most of the sugar is used by the SCOBY during the fermentation process, making way for a list of health benefits including enhanced
digestion, energy and improved skin and hair quality.
Brewmistress Meghan Werner from Theonista started making her own small batches for herself but word eventually got out and led to her started to making larger productions which are produced and bottle by
hand, locally, at her facility in Cape Town. Along with organic teas sourced from South Africa, Asia, and South America, only 100% pure fruit, root or botanical extracts and infusions are used, meaning no artificial flavors,
colorants, or preservatives. Yay for being natural and good for you!
The flavours have a tangy taste to them, slightly fizzy and are recommended to be served cold. I tried three of the flavours, and would say that the Lemongrass; orange & rooibos flavour was my favourite and would be the one I would repurchase. There are about 10-12 flavours (some are seasonal) so you’re bound to find one you’ll like.
